Plot Summary
In the world of the Death Gods, one god named Ryuk seems detached from his colleagues. He is bored of their life of sitting around, 'sleeping and gambling'.
It's an environment where effort is put to ridicule, much like certain work environments found on planet Earth. This is not true of the environment of
a Japanese student by the name of Light Yagami. However, finding his school work easy and boring, Light seems just as bored of his own world as Ryuk does.
The story begins as Ryuk drops his "Death Note", a notebook of pending deaths used by the Death Gods, into the human world in an attempt to stir up some fun.
Light finds the book, and after initally assuming it is a prank, can't resist trying it out.
The book claims to kill whoever is unfortunate enough to have his/her name inscribed on its pages. When the notebook passes Lights initial test of killing a criminal, and Light recovers from his initial shock,
Light quickly plans a self righteous role for himself in the world as a killer of criminals and immediately goes to work doing so.
Soon thereafter he is visited by the Death God Ryuk, who explains quite honestly that he merely dropped the book out of boredom and it belongs to Light Yagami now to do with as he pleases. Ryuk notes that
Light has killed more people in the first few days of the book being in his posession than any human before him, and Ryuk is amused by Light's plan to
become a "god" of the human world, by prolifically judging who is worthy to live.
